In interior design, there are two kinds of trends.
The ones that come and go in a flash. The ones that surprise us, like pineapples, flamingos and absolutely everything in copper.
And then there are the slow burner trends. The trends that aren’t invented by retailers simply to make us buy more stuff. But genuinely evolve as a result of our responses to what’s going on in the World. These are the trends that really matter.
So as we embrace 2022 what can we expect more of???

8 INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2022
Sustainability
In 2022 sustainability will continue to feature very strongly in our buying and decorating decisions. And there are so many ways we can make a positive impact to reduce waste. Using building materials that can be regenerated. Purchasing from brands that are carbon neutral. Shopping vintage and second-hand. Sourcing locally. Repurposing items we already own. It’s much less about cheap and easy furniture and more about buying something that will last.
Broken plan
It was probably only a few weeks into lockdown one when we started to think, “Perhaps it’s not such a good idea for all of us to be in one big space after all”. Open plan has certainly lost some of its appeal over the last eighteen months. But it’s not totally dead. It’s just evolving into Broken Plan, the concept of open-plan living but with more private nooks and areas that can be sectioned off by pocket doors, walls of plants, open bookshelves and screens. This style of living was already gaining momentum before COVID, but it’s set to be a firm favourite in 2022.
Less white / more colour
As we emerge from our lockdown lives there is no doubt we are seeking more vibrant and bold colours to celebrate our renewed sense of joy. Stark whites which have been popular for so long are now giving way to softer neutrals. And moody, inky darks are being replaced with purer, fresher hues. You’ll be seeing more colour this year that’s for sure.
High tech
Sometimes tech feels like it’s just for tech’s sake. But advancement in home gadgets means we are now much more in control of our home environment, controlling our heating, lighting and even our laundry via an app. This is great for reducing waste and can reduce the domestic workload, winner winner.
Cottagecore
If you’ve not come across this trend it’s basically a celebration of ‘the good life’. An aesthetic style that embodies all things country; home baking, jam making, homegrown, farmers markets, artisans, locally sourced produce, hand-made, flowers, forests, and countryside. It’s a maximalist look that brings together florals, chintzy prints and fringed lampshades and it’s set to continue for 2022.
Location inspired interiors
As we start to travel again we will be taking inspiration from other lands. We’ll be seeing more artisan pieces taking centre stage in our homes.
Outdoor glam
Our gratitude for outdoor space has been so heightened that we are now investing much more into making gardens an extension of our home. We’ll be upping the ante in how we furnish and style these areas, swapping knackered old deck chairs for stylish furniture that focuses on comfort.
Wellbeing
As our mental health has taken a battering we will continue to focus on spaces that support our well-being. Bedrooms that are designed to help us sleep better. Storage that reduces our physical and mental clutter. Spa-like bathrooms that help us relax. And of course, paint colours that make us feel good.
