THE DO'S AND DON'TS WHEN USING MIRRORS

THE DO’S AND DON’TS WHEN USING MIRRORS

Who knew it was possible to screw up hanging a mirror. That’s the trouble with interior design. Beautiful rooms look so easy and effortless but the reality is that there are so many principles of design at play. This means there are things we can get wrong. But don’t worry I’ve got you. Here are some do’s and don’ts when using mirrors as part of your decor.

1. DON’T HANG A MIRROR OPPOSITE AN EAST OR WEST-FACING WINDOW

If your mirror reflects the rising or setting sun it can create a lot of uncomfortable glare. Instead, hang it on the wall perpendicular to the window. If your window is North or South facing then go ahead and hang your mirror right opposite to reflect the light.

2. DO USE THE RIGHT SHAPE MIRROR FOR THE SPACE

Small or round mirrors suit smaller spaces. On a longer wall use a wider, horizontal mirror, or a collection of mirrors so the overall shape suits the proportions of the space.

3. DON’T HANG A MIRROR TOO HIGH

When you stand in front of the mirror your eye-line should be in the middle of the mirror. Or if you are hanging it above a piece of furniture or something structural like a fireplace, make sure it is low enough to feel connected with the space.

4. DO HANG A MIRROR OPPOSITE SOMETHING YOU LOVE

Hanging a mirror opposite something you love like, a piece of art or a beautiful light fitting, will enhance your visibility of it. Yay.

5. DON’T HANG A MIRROR OPPOSITE A TOILET

Consider what is going to be reflected in your mirror!
