How to easily arrange sofa cushions

Do you sometimes struggle with how to arrange them? No problem, I can help 🙂

Here are six ways to easily arrange your sofa cushions.

 

2:1

This is a really simple and informal arrangement to create a laid-back vibe. It’s particularly great for smaller sofas, loveseats and cuddlers. Simply use two similar-sized large, square cushions, one in each corner. Then pop a smaller, rectangular-shaped cushion in front of one of them. Nice and easy.

 

MIRROR SYMMETRY

Start with two larger cushions in each corner (50cm is a good size), then layer a smaller cushion (40/45cm) in front. This creates a mirror symmetry which will feel elegant and easy on the eye. It’s a great look if you don’t want the sofa to feel over-styled or too formal.

Tip: If you want to introduce some pattern but don’t want it to be too overbearing, go for the pattern on the larger cushions at the back, it will be visually broken up by the smaller cushion at the front.

 

BALANCED SYMMETRY

This is a step up from the mirror symmetry. In this arrangement add a rectangular cushion in the middle. This is great for creating a more formal look. It works best on a large two-seater / three-seater sofa where the five cushions fill the space nicely. If you have a much longer sofa and want a formal feel, try a row of seven square cushions (odd numbers always work best).

 

DOUBLE TRIO

This offers all the comfort but with a more informal look. Layer two large cushions at the back in each corner, they could be the same size (both 50cm), or one slightly smaller than the other (50cm and 45cm), then layer a rectangular cushion at the front on each side.

Tip: Make sure there is a common element tying your cushions together. In this example, there is a large-scale pattern, a small-scale pattern and a plain, so three very different cushions, but the similar colour palette pulls them all together.

 

IN THE MIDDLE

If you are lucky enough to have a curved sofa then go for three cushions in the middle, it’s elegant and understated so reflects the style of the sofa. It’s also a good arrangement so sofas that don’t have arms.

 

CORNER

With a corner sofa try layering two square cushions in each nook. Use a larger size at the back and a smaller size at the front. This is the most simple way to dress a sofa like this, for a more formal look try layering a rectangular cushion in front of a large, square cushion on every seat.

TIP: Choose cushions that have a different material/texture to your sofa for a more layered and interesting look.
