Want to know the two most important things about artwork?
Firstly you must absolutely must love it. Don’t choose art that matches your cushions. Choose art that resonates with you and makes you feel good.
Secondly, don’t hang your art in the wrong place, it will make it look bad.
Let’s look at what works and what doesn’t.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE ART #1

Ideally, your wall art should reflect the proportions of the space it is in. Or the piece of furniture it is hanging above.
Over something that is wide, like a sofa, use a wide landscape-orientated piece of artwork. Alternatively group two or three portrait-orientated pieces. Ideally, the width of the artwork or group of artworks should be at least two-thirds of the width of the sofa.
Equally. Don’t hang a landscape-shaped piece of wall art over a narrow piece of furniture like a chest of drawers. It will feel top-heavy and unbalanced.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE ART #2

Avoid hanging something small over a large piece of furniture. In the image below the print is way too small to be hanging over this fireplace. It’s totally lost in the space. Plus it has been positioned too high which makes it feel totally disconnected from what’s going on beneath it.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SIZE ART #3

With smaller pieces of art find a small space to hang it like an alcove or on a narrow wall. Or, prop it up on a mantelpiece or on a desk and group it with other smaller accessories.
